Best Practices for Web Smart Content Placement

When you get started, you might not know exactly where you want to place Smart Content, and what configuration you should set them up with, so here is a standard strategy which many websites implement as a starting point :

Home page

  • Place two horizontal Smart Content blocks ('home1' and 'home2') in the middle of the home page.
  • Configure 'home1' with the "performance" algorithm over the last 24 hours. It will always display products that had a good performance recently.
  • On 'home2', use an algorithm such as "visited". This will show products that the visitors have seen before (if they're still available) and give them a sense of comfort as they will know the products they see. If the visitor has not seen any products, the Smart Content will not be displayed.

Category pages

  • Create one Smart Content block that shows the most "popular" products over a period of time, displayed at the top of the category page, or inside a sidebar.
  • Use the "data-content" filter to restrict items to the current category using one of the filters : "corresponding to" or "similar to".

Product pages

  • Create three Smart Content blocks and place them right under the current product's description/picture.
  • The first Smart Content block would be an upsell Smart Content. Use the "recommendations" algorithm with an "on a product page" filter to restrict products to the current category/type.
  • The second Smart Content block would be a cross-sell Smart Content, showing products from other categories. The algorithm can be different depending on what you want to show and the "on a product page" filter has to 'exclude' the context category.
  • The third Smart Content block, at the very bottom of the page, would show "visited" products without any filters.

On a cart page

Create one Smart Content block that shows product recommendations depending on the content of the current cart using an "is in an array of" filter.
