Targeting Capabilities
When you add targeting rules to any of your Liveclicker elements, it enables you to personalize the content by tracking things in realtime based on the opener data from 5 different types of targeting rules: Device, Location, Date & Time, Environment, and Custom. We'll explain what each of them entails and then provide examples for specific instances after.
Targeting by device
The opener's device used to open the email. You can choose to use either the device's email client, OS, OS version, device, browser or Mobile carrier (US only).
Note:
- Mobile Carrier can only be detected when a recipient opens an email on a mobile device.
- Targeting based on the Outlook email client for Android devices or Mac is not supported, as it is impossible to distinguish it from the native email client.
- Apple, Gmail and Yahoo/AOL email clients deliver all image data using a proxy. That means that all image requests appear to come from their servers and not the original email client. Because of this, any targeting that is based on Device, Location, Environment, and Time Zone will be unknown and the default version of your content will be delivered.
Targeting by Location
The opener's location at the moment the email is opened. You can choose to use either the
- location — For the location you can use different levels of details; the country (United States), the State/Region (California, USA), the county (Alameda County, CA, USA), the city (Oakland), zip code (253678), or the exact address (The White house, 1600 Pennsylvania AVE NW, Washington DC 20500, USA).
- continent — use any of the countries within the 7 continents.
- language — use the default language of the device. Options include Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese.
- zip code — use a specific zip code (only supported for the US and Brazil).
To determine the opener's location, the following happens:
1. First, Liveclicker checks the custom field for the LiveMap element.
2. If no data is available in the custom field, the IP address of the opener is used.
Note:
- When setting up a rule that is more than/less than X miles away from a specific location, Liveclicker measures the distance between the opener's location and the center of the location.
- It is not possible to detect language in Apple, Gmail, Yahoo on desktop or mobile, and Outlook Desktop. If a recipient opens in one of these four email clients, they will receive the default or fallback version.
Targeting by date & time
The opener's date and time at the moment of opening the email. You can choose from one of the many options here:
- Timezone
- part of the day
- month
- day of week
- time after the first open,
- a specific date and time
- Date/Time (Opener/Sender)
- Date/Time (Custom timezone: The time specified in the targeting rule is relative to the timezone from the location on the esp_maplocation ESP tag.)
- Time (Opener/Sender)
- Time (Custom timezone: The time specified in the targeting rule is relative to the timezone from the location on the esp_maplocation ESP tag.)
Note:
- Apple, Gmail and Yahoo/AOL email clients deliver all image data using a proxy. That means that all image requests appear to come from their servers and not the original email client. Because of this, any targeting that is based on Device, Location, Environment, and Time Zone will be unknown and the default version of your content will be delivered.
Targeting by environment
Use the opener's local weather conditions in your targeting rules. You can choose from
- Weather Forecast (based on Opener Location or Custom Location Data)
- Temperature Forecast (based on Opener Location or Custom Location Data)
- Pollen Forecast (Pollen forecast is limited to the next 15 days)
- Precipitation Forecast,
- UV Level Forecast
Note:
- Unlike the LiveForecast element that uses a daily weather result to give a summary of the weather for the entire day, targeting by environment rules uses current weather results that are within an hour or so of open time. This can lead to differences in what version is served depending on when an element is opened.
Targeting by custom data
In this case the rule is based on a unique identifier in the customer's account. You can choose from any of the custom fields configured for your environment, the store ID, Product ID, Tracking number, Map location, Arrival date and destination city.
Targeting by dynamic fields
You can use the data stored in the dynamic fields to target a specific segment of your audience. These dynamic fields can only be used when data has been imported (CSV or API).
