LivePoll - Choose Your Type of LivePoll
The LivePoll element allows you to create interactive polls for your subscribers and embed them seamlessly into email campaigns with real-time results.
Using LivePoll to poll your email recipients directly from the campaigns you send is not only a fun feature for your subscribers but it's also a great way to increase your engagement rates and gather more specific profile data from poll questions.
Depending on the experience you want to achieve, there are three different types of LivePoll campaigns that you can create: an image-based option, a landing page option, or an iOS optimized landing page option. We'll go over each of them below.
Image Based LivePoll
An Image Based LivePoll is comprised of separate question-and-answer images that can change dynamically pre-vote and post-vote, depending on how you have set up your campaign. Each answer image is clickable, and clicking on the answer will automatically vote for that answer and simultaneously take the opener to a designated clickthrough URL.
Advantages of using an Image Based LivePoll
- It's very easy to integrate into an email template, each question and answer is just an image tag.
- Openers can vote with one click.
- Flexible options for personalization and delivering different experiences pre and post-vote.
Landing Page LivePoll
A Landing Page LivePoll will behave the same way in all email clients. Here's what you can expect:
1. When landing pages are hosted by Liveclicker, the opener will see the static version of the poll and will need to click it to take the poll.
2. Once clicked, the opener will be taken to a Liveclicker hosted landing page where they can take the poll and see the results. There's an option to click the call-to-action button to go to the preset clickthrough URL after taking the poll.
3. When users reopen the email after already voting in the poll, they will see the results image which will be linked directly to the preset clickthrough URL.
Other Landing Page LivePoll Options
-
You can further customize your LivePoll landing page by using custom CSS.
-
You can choose to not show your users the results image on the Liveclicker hosted landing page. Instead, once the user votes on the landing page, they will go directly to the preset clickthrough link. However, this does not apply in the 'in-email' voting that happens on iOS devices when iOS Optimization is turned ON.
-
If you don't want to use the Liveclicker hosted landing page, you can embed the LivePoll landing page functionality into your own page to create a custom landing page for your LivePoll. It's important to know that each page hit would count as an impression so we recommend using a custom landing page over your website that might experience high volumes of traffic.
This is a custom service that must be requested through Liveclicker Support or your Account Manager.)
iOS Optimized Landing Page LivePoll
Specifically for iOS users who open the email in the native email app, an iOS Optimized LivePoll gives your subscribers the ability to vote and see the results of their vote inline without ever leaving the inbox.
When using this functionality, your subscribers will receive 1 of 2 different LivePoll experiences depending on where they open the email:
a) If opened in the native email client on an iOS device
- The opener can vote in the email and then see the results immediately.
- When the user clicks on the results image in the email, they will be taken to the preset clickthrough URL.
- When users reopen the email after having voted already, they will see the results image which will be linked directly to the preset clickthrough URL.
b) If opened in any other email client on any device
- The opener will see the static version of the poll and will need to click it to take the poll.
- Once clicked, the opener will be taken to a Liveclicker hosted landing page where the opener can take the poll and see the results.
- Once the results are displayed, the opener can click the call-to-action button to go to the preset clickthrough URL.
- When users reopen the email after already voting in the poll, they will see the results image which will be linked directly to the preset clickthrough URL.
Additional LivePoll Options
Depending on the type of LivePoll you use, there are other controls you can use to customize the experience.
-
You can set up your LivePoll to not remember when someone has taken a poll; which will allow a user to vote over and over again. However, this is only recommended to be used during testing and when enabled the analytics are counted differently. Impressions, Daily uniques and Clicks will be counted as usual, but votes won't be counted or reflected in the Insights Dashboard.
-
The iOS Optimized Landing Page LivePoll has a unique embed code that contains CSS media queries and a link to a CSS stylesheet that's dynamic. Whereas, Landing Page and Image Based LivePolls embed codes are simply HTML anchor tags with image tags within them.

Using custom CSS, you can deliver different result images and clickthrough URLs depending on the LivePoll answer selection. Refer to this article for more details.
