Earn Rule Settings
Overview
The Earn Rule Settings screen allows you to view, manage, and create Earn Rule Groups.
Earn Rules specify how Members earn metrics (such as reward points) for different Activity types. Earn Rules are typically used by clients who have an "earn and burn" style program, in which Members makes purchases in order to earn points. Members can then spend those points on Rewards, or to make other purchases.
The Loyalty platform allows you to organize Earn Rules into Rule Groups, and to then define the strategy for evaluating multiple applicable Rules within each Group (and across Groups). Loyalty supports the following strategies for Earn Rule Groups:
-
Sum all Applicable Rules: Results from all applicable Rules within the Group are summed to calculate the result for the Group.
-
Use Best Rule Result: The best result among all applicable Rule results from this Group is used as the Group result. For accrual Rules, highest value is the best.
-
First Applicable Rule: The result from the first applicable Rule within the Group is used, based on the Rules' sequence within the Group.
For each Earn Rule Group, a result for the metric is calculated as per the Group’s strategy. If you have more than one Earn Rule Group, the platform always selects the "best result" from among all the results from all Rule Groups; this "best result" is the final calculated value for the metric.
The following diagram shows a simple scenario with two Rule Groups. The "Base" Rule Group uses a "Sum all applicable rules" strategy, and the "Promotion" Rule Group uses a "Choose best" strategy (we'll assume all the Rules are applicable based on the Conditions). The platform selects the highest value between the two Rule Groups, after each Group has been evaluated.
The result from the first Rule Group is 30 (that is, 10 + 20). The result from the second Rule Group is 15 (that is, the best of 5 and 15).
The final calculated result for the metric is 30 (that is, the best of 30 and 15).
Rule Combinations
As described above, if you have multiple Earn Rule Groups, the platform automatically selects the "best result" from among all the results from all the Earn Rule Groups. If you need some other calculation besides "best results," you must use a Rule Combination. Rule Combinations allow results from multiple Earn Rule Groups to be summed or combined using other functions.
Let's continue the above example by using a "sum" Rule Combination, then compare the two results, as shown in the following diagram:
As described above, the result from the first comparison is 30 (that is, the best of 30 and 15). The result from the sum Rule Combination is 45 (that is, 30 + 15).
The final calculated result for the metric is 45 (that is, the best of 30 and 45).
